Sea of Ruin follows Bennett Sharp, a female pirate captain trying to survive in a dangerous world of betrayal, violence, and shifting loyalties. After her life is torn apart, Bennett becomes caught between enemies, secrets, and a search tied to a mysterious compass. As she navigates the brutal world of pirates, revenge, and desire, she is forced to face painful choices about survival, trust, and freedom.
I liked the idea of a darker pirate romance, especially since I had not read anything with that kind of setting before. The beginning caught my attention, and the concept of the compass seemed like it could lead to an interesting mystery or adventure. I also appreciated that the book had a darker tone, because that usually works for me when it has a strong story behind it.
The biggest issue for me was that I made it more than halfway through the book and still did not really understand what the main purpose of the story was. I knew the compass was supposed to matter, but after being introduced early on, it felt like it disappeared into the background for most of the book. It did not become important again until much later, which made the plot feel unfocused.
A lot of the book felt like it centered on the main character going through trauma over and over again. Instead of feeling like a dark pirate adventure, it became emotionally exhausting to read. I do not mind heavy books, but I need the darker content to feel balanced with plot, character development, or a clear direction. For me, this one felt more overwhelming than engaging.
Unfortunately, Sea of Ruin did not work for me. I wanted to love the pirate setting and the darker romance, but the story felt too focused on trauma and not focused enough on the actual plot. The compass storyline had potential, but it was not present enough throughout the book to keep me invested. This is not one I would personally recommend.
